Once upon a time in Kilve Court

So, yeah. I just got back from teaching a brilliant weekend at Kilve with Helen. It was the first course we designed as a pair, and I think it went pretty damn well. Well, other than my shoes, at least...

Running around in a flurry on Friday evening, trying to get things done? Right shoe goes flying twenty paces

Feel the need to let off steam by running around the grounds at ten on Saturday night? Slip and slide so much I end up taking both my shoes off, throwing them in the lake and running barefoot over a damp lawn

Try to clear the table on Sunday morning? Catch the offending shoe on a chair and go flying, getting the attention of everyone in the dining room.

Yeah, they really shouldn't let me out in public...

But, other than my Cinderella complex, everything seemed to run smoothly. We had nine kids on the course, looking at subverting fairy tales and shaping them into poetry, and I think they all had a blast. They explored the uncharted depths of fairy tales, twisted stories on their heads, spent several hours exploring the woods, collecting thoughts and listening to stories like Tam Lin and The Crane Wife, learned the basics of freeverse, ballads and rhyming couplets, wrote their own brilliant poems and even got to play "spot the fairy tale" in Shrek. And there was a rather lovely moment in the woods on Saturday:

Me: Just imagine being here at dusk... all on your own a trying to get home. Imagine the fog spreading through the trees until you can barely see more than three metres ahead. And you hear a rustling on the path behind you... You turn around, but there's nothing there. Or nothing you can see...

And then?

I kid you not everyone - I couldn't have done it better if I'd planned it. I don't think I've ever seen a dog look so like a wolf before, and I'm sure the kids hadn't either.
